" ليست المشكلة أن نعلم المسلم عقيدة هو يملكها، و إنما المهم أن نرد إلي هذه العقيدة فاعليتها و قوتها الإيجابية و تأثيرها الإجتماعي و في كلمة واحدة : إن مشكلتنا ليست في أن نبرهن للمسلم علي وجود الله بقدر ما هي في أن نشعره بوجوده و نملأ به نفسه، بإعتباره مصدرا للطاقة. "

Modesty and chastity in Islam

The contemporaries of the Prophet (peace be upon him) tried to change the relationship between men and women in accordance with the laws of God. These relations were characterized by diffidence, chastity, understanding, refinement.

Muslims followed the commandment of the Creator: “[O Muhammad], tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do”.

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed. (The Quran, 24:31)

As Aisha reported (radyyallahu anha), after the revelation of these verses women Sahaba immediately, without waiting to return home, cut off from their garments extra tissue, closed their head and dropped the robes so that they covered the ankles, as was given in the Qur'an (Bukhati, “Tafsir”, 24/12, Abu Dawud, “Libas”, 31-33/4102).

Safia bin Shaybah mentions that after the revelation of these verses men ran home and read them to their women: mothers, wives, sisters, daughters and all female relatives. After that, Muslims, sacrificing even the most beautiful dresses, made of them covers over their head and tried to cover their body as it is said in the Quran. They immediately realized the command of the Supreme and showed that sincerely believe in what has been sent down. In the morning namaz women wearing head scarves were standing in rows behind men (Ibn Katheer, “Tafsir”; “Nur”, 31).

The companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) traced so as to between men and women were not unresolved relations. In public life between the sexes was maintained reasonable distance, and allowed the relationship was defined in advance. Because Islam forbids all acts that may lead to sin. Thus a man is closed or withdraws the path to the temptations. Despite the fact that it is very important for believers committing collective prayers, and especially Friday prayer, but to prevent unacceptable interaction between men and women Islam frees Muslim women from committing collective prayers. The prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized: “For women, the most blessed mosque is a corner of their house” (Ahmad, VI, 297).

Once the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came out of the mosque and noticed that men and women are mixed in the crowd. Then he turned to the Muslim: “Stand aside! Do not walk in the middle of the road, but walk on the edges”. After that, women began to walk in a way that they dress hit the wall” (Abu Dawud, “Adab”, 167-168, 5272).
