Under chapter 2 Legal and Historical Reflections on the position of Muslim Populations under Non-Muslim Rule extract from the book of Bernard Lewis "Islam and the West", we can read this long paragraph in the end of a chapter :

Last year, while I was in Paris, I was invited to participate in a television program" discussing books. The following day, a young man in a shop where I went to make a purchase, recognizing me, remarked that he had seen me on television talking about Islam. He then made an observation that has been puzzling me ever since. "My father,"he said, "was a Muslim, but I am Parisian."What, I wondered, did he mean-that Islam is a a place ? Or that Paris is a religion ? As stated, neither proposition, obviously, is true.

Yet as implied, neither is completely false. Their interacting implications reflect the dilemna of a minority, most of them from the less modernized parts of their own societies of origin, who now find themselves in a situation in which they differ from the majority among, whom they live, not only because they profess a different religion, but also because they hold a radically different conception of what religion means, demands and defines."

Bernard Lewis gave  a right definition of the role of Islam in the life, Islamic conception of life doesn't permit to Muslim to live in European societies and most of Muslim immigration in France for example lost their religious identity and also don't succeed in their integration in European way of life.
