قال الله تعالى

 {  إِنَّ اللَّــهَ لا يُغَيِّــرُ مَـا بِقَــوْمٍ حَتَّــى يُـغَيِّـــرُوا مَــا بِــأَنْــفُسِــــهِـمْ  }

سورة  الرعد  .  الآيـة   :   11

ahlaa

Beyond Muslim Diversity to Racial Equity

Written by
We can say “Peace on Earth.” We can sing about it, preach about it or pray about it, but if we have not internalized the mythology to make it happen inside us, then it will not be.” –Betty Shabazz Muslims in North America love to talk about our diversity. We beam with pride during visual presentations of our communal rituals. We are awed by multi-hued crowds coming together in complete submission. We cite our ahadith and Qur’anic ayaat, declaring that there is no racism in Islam. While we claim to love diversity and condemn racism, our communities and organizations struggle with racial inequality. Leadership in a…
The Kodieran gold deposit in Mali never produced much gold beyond the specks that locals panned from this remote corner of Africa. Yet in 2012, the mine gained a curious shareholder: Airbus. The French aviation giant bought its stake in a round-about way, moving 15 million euros from an internal fund through a series of entities in the British Virgin Islands, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Germany. Airbus’s foray into mining didn’t pan out, with the company ultimately losing almost all of its investment. Its main business fared better, sealing its first contract with the Mali military to sell two second-hand Super Puma…
New Delhi: More than 300,000 new workers can be employed in wind and solar jobs and more than one million total employment opportunities can be created in achieving India’s ambitious clean energy goals to install 175 gigawatts (GW) of renewable power by 2022, said a study released on Wednesday. It highlighted that the solar and wind energy sectors employed more than 21,000 additional people across India in 2016-17 while an additional 25,000 people will be employed over the coming year. The study also said that labour-intensive rooftop solar segment will employ 70% of the new workforce, creating seven times more jobs…

"The Clash of Civilizations?"

Written by
INTRODUCTION Harvard political scientist Huntington has developed a grand overview of war in recent history with projections for its future which pivot on conflict between civilizations instead of over ideologies or economics: World politics is entering a new phase, and intellectuals have not hesitated to proliferate visions of what it will be--the end of history, the return of traditional rivalries between nation states, and the decline of the nation state from the conflicting pulls of tribalism and globalism, among others. Each of these visions catches aspects of the emerging reality. Yet they all miss a crucial, indeed a central, aspect…

How the government can read your email

Written by
With Congress focused on reforming the tax code and replacing Obamacare—plus keeping the government open—there’s little oxygen for other policy issues. But one big issue is sure to get some attention because it expires at the end of December: the government’s surveillance authority. Government surveillance has been this big issue for 11 years, and much of the current debate boils down to one obscure-sounding but crucial corner of the law. The controversial program is called Section 702, after the section of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that allows the government to collect the communications of Americans under certain circumstances. Lawmakers are…
Recent news reports describe a massive increase in civilian casualties at the hands of the US military or US allies. In Mosul, Iraq, hundreds of residents have been killed as US forces join Iraqi troops in the last stage of their assault on the ISIS-held city. In Yemen, the United States is increasing its direct involvement in the Saudi-led air war being waged against the poorest country in the Arab world, as the UN and other aid workers struggle against mass famine and a looming cholera epidemic on top of the thousands already killed and millions displaced. And in…
Background Little information is available about the geo-economic variations in demographics, management, and outcomes of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We aimed to characterise the effect of these geo-economic variations in patients enrolled in the Large Observational Study to Understand the Global Impact of Severe Acute Respiratory Failure (LUNG SAFE). Methods LUNG SAFE was done during 4 consecutive weeks in winter, 2014, in a convenience sample of 459 intensive-care units in 50 countries across six continents. Inclusion criteria were admission to a participating intensive-care unit (including transfers) within the enrolment window and receipt of invasive or non-invasive ventilation.…

My Eid ul Fitr Holiday

Written by
I’m woken up by the alarm flashing 6:00 A.M. in bright red. The sun isn’t even out yet. I’m tired from last night’s excitement and the last thing on my mind is getting out of my bed and getting ready to go to the mosque. My family and I celebrated the last night of Ramadan by eating Iftar (dinner at sunset) all together at one house. As the groggy feeling slips away, I am filled with excitement for Eid ul Fitr, the holiday celebrating the end of the month of Ramadan (a month long fasting period in August this year).…

Patience, Perseverance, and Prayer

Written by
During times of deep trial, despair, and sadness, Muslims seek comfort and guidance in the words of Allah in the Quran. Allah reminds us that all people will be tried and tested in life, and calls upon Muslims to bear these trials with "patient perseverance and prayer." Indeed, Allah reminds us that many people before us have suffered and had their faith tested; so too will we be tried and tested in this life. There are dozens upon dozens of verses that remind Muslims to be patient and trust in Allah during these times of trial. Among them: "Seek Allah's help with patient perseverance and…
After the Manchester massacre… yes, and after Nice and Paris, Mosul and Abu Ghraib and 7/7 and the Haditha massacre – remember those 28 civilians, including children, killed by US Marines, four more than Manchester but no minute’s silence for them? And of course 9/11… Counterbalancing cruelty is no response, of course. Just a reminder. As long as we bomb the Middle East instead of seeking justice there, we too will be attacked. But what we must concentrate upon, according to the monstrous Trump, is terror, terror, terror, terror, terror. And fear. And security. Which we will not have while…
