Gaza: A Renewed Occupation Council Under a False Name

By Afaf Aniba

The objective of the Peace Force in Gaza was to end the aggression and stop the bombing and destruction — a goal that has not been achieved to this day.

Bringing in humanitarian aid, rescuing the wounded, rehabilitating hospitals and infrastructure — none of this has been realized. How can hospitals and infrastructure be restored when the rubble of destruction piles up like mountains, and no machinery has been allowed in to clear it?

As for the tasks of the so-called Peace Council:

– Stabilizing the ceasefire: This has not happened, since the council has not yet been formed; and even if it were, it would not be able to impose a ceasefire on an occupying army that recognizes no law but its own.

– Organizing transitional internal security: How can that be ensured when the head of the council is British, knows nothing about Gaza’s social structure, and has no idea about the number of detainees or those under security and judicial pursuit? How could he possibly establish internal security amid the presence of collaborators, traitors, Mossad agents, and continuous Zionist bombardment — with the Israeli army ready to intervene at any moment?

– Supervising aid and organizing reconstruction: How can that be done when the Zionists control fifty-two percent of Gaza, have no intention of withdrawing, still prevent the entry of aid to this day, and-together with a complicit Egypt-control all the border crossings? How can aid enter while the siege imposed on Gaza for more than twenty years has yet to be lifted?

– Preparing for a unified Palestinian administration: And how can that happen when the Palestinian ranks are dangerously divided, and both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority distrust one another? Their current understanding is circumstantial, interest-based, and extremely fragile—not to mention the deep disagreements among the various Palestinian factions.

What is truly disheartening is that nothing tangible has been achieved on the ground. The people of Gaza have not felt any real impact from the so-called truce, even though they are the ones most affected by security issues, the cessation of aggression, and the hope of returning to the minimum conditions of a dignified life. The people of Gaza still suffer from all the consequences of war and aggression, as if the death raining from the sky had never stopped.

Frankly, no Peace Council and no Peace Force will achieve the desired outcome in Gaza. Hamas accepted the truce reluctantly, to spare bloodshed – yet blood continues to flow in torrents, and the demand for freedom has drifted decades away, while the innocent there pay the price.
