{"id":10397,"date":"2026-01-06T07:58:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T07:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/natharatmouchrika.net\/home\/?p=10397"},"modified":"2026-01-06T07:58:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T07:58:09","slug":"islam-in-kyrgyzstan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/natharatmouchrika.net\/home\/?p=10397","title":{"rendered":"Islam in Kyrgyzstan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10398 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/natharatmouchrika.net\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/f98f49268efa975717477c9b3a4e207a-171x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"171\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/natharatmouchrika.net\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/f98f49268efa975717477c9b3a4e207a-171x300.jpg 171w, https:\/\/natharatmouchrika.net\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/f98f49268efa975717477c9b3a4e207a-585x1024.jpg 585w, https:\/\/natharatmouchrika.net\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/f98f49268efa975717477c9b3a4e207a.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 171px) 100vw, 171px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The vast majority of people in\u00a0<a title=\"Kyrgyzstan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kyrgyzstan\">Kyrgyzstan<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0<a title=\"Muslims\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muslims\">Muslims<\/a>; as of 2019, 90.7% of the country&#8217;s population were followers of\u00a0<a title=\"Islam\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam\">Islam<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam_in_Kyrgyzstan#cite_note-1\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>1<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam_in_Kyrgyzstan#cite_note-2\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>2<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Muslims in Kyrgyzstan are generally of the\u00a0<a title=\"Non-denominational Muslim\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Non-denominational_Muslim\">Non denominational<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Sunni Islam\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sunni_Islam\">Sunni<\/a>\u00a0branch, mostly of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Hanafi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hanafi\">Hanafi<\/a>\u00a0school, which entered the region during the eighth century.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Gendering_Ethnicity_pg._100_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam_in_Kyrgyzstan#cite_note-Gendering_Ethnicity_pg._100-3\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>3<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Kyrgyzstan is home to\u00a0<a title=\"List of mosques in Kyrgyzstan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_mosques_in_Kyrgyzstan\">more than 2000 mosques<\/a>. Most Kyrgyz Muslims practice their religion in a specific way influenced by shamanic tribal customs. There has been a revival of Islamic practices since independence in Kyrgyzstan. For the most part religious leaders deal only with issues of religion and do not reach out to communities, but rather offer services to those who come to the mosque. There are regional differences, with the southern part of the country being more religious.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam_in_Kyrgyzstan#cite_note-4\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>4<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Kyrgyzstan remained a secular state after the fall of\u00a0<a title=\"Communism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Communism\">communism<\/a>, which had only superficial influence on religious practice when Kyrgyzstan was a\u00a0<a title=\"Republics of the Soviet Union\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republics_of_the_Soviet_Union\">Soviet republic<\/a>, despite the policy of\u00a0<a title=\"State atheism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/State_atheism\">state atheism<\/a>. Most of the\u00a0<a title=\"Russians\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russians\">Russian<\/a>\u00a0population of Kyrgyzstan is\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Russian Orthodox\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russian_Orthodox\">Russian Orthodox<\/a>. More recent exposure to Islam occurred in the seventeenth century, when the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Jungars\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jungars\">Jungars<\/a>\u00a0drove the Kyrgyz of the\u00a0<a title=\"Tian Shan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tian_Shan\">Tian Shan<\/a>\u00a0region into the\u00a0<a title=\"Fergana Valley\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fergana_Valley\">Fergana Valley<\/a>, whose population was totally Islamic due to previous Umayyad influence. However, as the danger from the Jungars subsided, a few elements of the Kyrgyz population returned to some of their tribal customs. When the\u00a0<a title=\"Khanate of Kokand\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khanate_of_Kokand\">Quqon Khanate<\/a>\u00a0advanced into northern Kyrgyzstan in the eighteenth century, various northern Kyrgyz tribes<sup id=\"cite_ref-Gendering_Ethnicity_pg._100_3-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam_in_Kyrgyzstan#cite_note-Gendering_Ethnicity_pg._100-3\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>3<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0remained aloof from the official Islamic practices of that regime. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, the entire Kyrgyz population, including the tribes in the north, had converted to Sunni Islam. Each of the Muslim ethnic groups has a deep and long tradition of customary law. Under this belief system, which predates their contact with Islam, Kyrgyz tribes traditionally adopted reindeer, camels, snakes, owls, and bears as objects of worship. The sky, earth, sun, moon, and stars also play an important religious role. The strong dependence of the nomads on the forces of nature reinforced such connections and fostered belief in\u00a0<a title=\"Shamanism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shamanism\">shamanism<\/a>. Traces of such beliefs remain in the religious practice of many of today&#8217;s Kyrgyz residing in the north.<sup class=\"noprint Inline-Template Template-Fact\">[<i><a title=\"Wikipedia:Citation needed\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citation_needed\"><span title=\"This claim needs references to reliable sources. (August 2021)\">citation needed<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup>\u00a0Kyrgyz sociologist\u00a0<a title=\"Rakhat Achylova\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rakhat_Achylova\">Rakhat Achylova<\/a>\u00a0discussed how aspects of\u00a0<a title=\"Tengrism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tengrism\">Tengrism<\/a>\u00a0were adopted into Kyrgyz Islam.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:3_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam_in_Kyrgyzstan#cite_note-:3-5\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>5<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Knowledge of and interest in Islam is much stronger in the south than further north. Although the constitution forbids the intrusion of any ideology or religion in the conduct of state business, a growing number of public figures have expressed support for the promotion of Islamic traditions.<sup id=\"cite_ref-isn.ethz.ch_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam_in_Kyrgyzstan#cite_note-isn.ethz.ch-6\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>6<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0As in other parts of\u00a0<a title=\"Central Asia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Central_Asia\">Central Asia<\/a>, non-Central Asians have been concerned about the potential of a\u00a0<a title=\"Islamism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islamism\">fundamentalist Islamic<\/a>\u00a0revolution that would emulate\u00a0<a title=\"Iran\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iran\">Iran<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Afghanistan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afghanistan\">Afghanistan<\/a>\u00a0by bringing Islam directly into the shaping of state policy, to the detriment of the non-Islamic population.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Because of sensitivity about the economic consequences of a continued outflow of Russians (<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Brain drain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brain_drain\">brain drain<\/a>), then president\u00a0<a title=\"Askar Akayev\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Askar_Akayev\">Askar Akayev<\/a>\u00a0took particular pains to reassure the non-Kyrgyz that no\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Islamic revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islamic_revolution\">Islamic revolution<\/a>\u00a0would occur. Akayev paid public visits to\u00a0<a title=\"Bishkek\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bishkek\">Bishkek<\/a>&#8216;s main\u00a0<a title=\"Russian Orthodox Church\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russian_Orthodox_Church\">Russian Orthodox<\/a>\u00a0church and directed one million rubles from the state treasury toward that faith&#8217;s church-building fund. He also appropriated funds and other support for a German cultural center. Nevertheless, there has been support from local government to build bigger mosques and religious schools.<sup id=\"cite_ref-isn.ethz.ch_6-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam_in_Kyrgyzstan#cite_note-isn.ethz.ch-6\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>6<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Additionally, recent bills have been proposed to outlaw\u00a0<a title=\"Abortion\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abortion\">abortion<\/a>, and numerous attempts have been made to decriminalize\u00a0<a title=\"Polygamy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polygamy\">polygamy<\/a>\u00a0and to allow officials to travel to\u00a0<a title=\"Mecca\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mecca\">Mecca<\/a>\u00a0on a\u00a0<a title=\"Hajj\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hajj\">hajj<\/a>\u00a0under a tax-free agreement.<sup id=\"cite_ref-isn.ethz.ch_6-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam_in_Kyrgyzstan#cite_note-isn.ethz.ch-6\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>6<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In August 2016, the former President of Kyrgyzstan,\u00a0<a title=\"Almazbek Atambayev\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Almazbek_Atambayev\">Almazbek Atambayev<\/a>, claimed that &#8220;women can become radicalised to become terrorists if they put on Islamic dress.\u201d His remarks followed several weeks of controversy over government-sponsored hoardings or banners put up in the streets of the capital Bishkek to try to dissuade Kyrgyz women from wearing Islamic clothing, notably the hijab, niqab and burka.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam_in_Kyrgyzstan#cite_note-7\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>7<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<div class=\"mw-heading mw-heading2\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<h2 id=\"Current_status\">Current status<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"mw-editsection\"><span class=\"mw-editsection-bracket\">[<\/span><a title=\"Edit section: Current status\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Islam_in_Kyrgyzstan&amp;action=edit&amp;section=4\">edit<\/a><span class=\"mw-editsection-bracket\">]<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The state recognizes two Muslim feast days as official holidays:\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Eid ul-Fitr\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eid_ul-Fitr\">Eid ul-Fitr<\/a>\u00a0(<i>\u00d6r\u00f6z Ayt<\/i>), which ends\u00a0<a title=\"Ramadan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ramadan\">Ramadan<\/a>, and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Eid ul-Adha\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eid_ul-Adha\">Eid ul-Adha<\/a>\u00a0(<i>Kurban Ayt<\/i>), which commemorates Ibrahim&#8217;s willingness to sacrifice his son. The country also recognizes Orthodox\u00a0<a title=\"Christmas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christmas\">Christmas<\/a>\u00a0as well as the traditional\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Persian people\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Persian_people\">Persian<\/a>\u00a0festival of\u00a0<a title=\"Nowruz\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nowruz\">Nowruz<\/a>.
