Brutal technology field-tested on Palestinians has helped to propel the state’s economy to the top of global performance charts.<\/div>\n

Late last year, the Economist\u00a0published<\/a>\u00a0an article titled \u201cWhich economy did best in 2025?\u201d\u00a0The annual ranking of 36 mostly rich countries, conducted for the fifth year in a row, aimed to pinpoint the \u201ceconomy of the year\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Economist compiled data on five indicators: inflation, GDP, jobs, stock market performance, and \u201cinflation breadth\u201d, measuring the share of product categories with an annual price increase of more than two percent.<\/p>\n

Countries were ranked on each measure, creating an \u201coverall score of economic success\u201d in 2025. To my surprise,\u00a0Israel<\/a>\u00a0ranked third, after Portugal and Ireland.<\/p>\n

Two main indicators have driven this \u201ceconomic success\u201d. Israel\u2019s economy recorded a GDP growth rate of\u00a03.5 percent, surpassing the global average of\u00a0around 3.2 percent<\/a>. More surprisingly, its stock market soared, with share prices growing by 53 percent over the previous year – outperforming the world\u2019s major stock markets.<\/p>\n

Although Israel has been waging\u00a0war on Gaza<\/a>\u00a0for more than two years now, such figures typically reflect a strong economy, with companies reporting solid earnings and growth, and domestic and foreign investors expressing their confidence in the country.<\/p>\n

According to a Times of Israel\u00a0report<\/a>, foreign investors \u201cflocked to Israeli markets to buy shares starting in mid-2024 after a sell-off at the outbreak of the war in 2023\u201d.<\/p>\n

Citing data from the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, the report noted that as of last September, \u201cthe value of holdings by foreign financial institutions in Tel Aviv stocks, excluding dual-listed stocks, reached a historic record of $19.2 billion, more than double the figure before the outbreak of war\u201d.<\/p>\n

Feedback loop<\/h3>\n

Much coverage of this issue has focused on Israel\u2019s stock market being heavily weighted towards technology companies, amid a broader tech boom. To bolster economic resilience, the International Monetary Fund\u00a0has cited<\/a>\u00a0the need for Israel to further enhance its \u201ccompetitive edge in high-tech and AI\u201d.<\/p>\n

World Bank data<\/a>\u00a0clearly shows the Israeli tech boom, with a steady increase in high-technology exports as a percentage of manufactured exports in recent years: 37 percent in 2024, up from just eight percent in 2006.<\/p>\n

Israeli research institutions talk about the country\u2019s high-tech sector acting as a primary economic engine over the past decade,\u00a0accounting<\/a>\u00a0for more than 40 percent of the country\u2019s GDP growth between 2018 and 2023. Around 400,000 people are employed in the high-tech sector, which accounts for one-fifth of Israel\u2019s total GDP.<\/p>\n

According<\/a>\u00a0to the Strategy International think tank, Israel\u2019s \u201cunique\u201d fusion of technology and defence, including the \u201ctight-knit relationship between the military, academia, and private tech industries\u201d has created a feedback loop that \u201ccontinuously drives technological advancements\u201d in cybersecurity, surveillance and AI-driven intelligence systems.<\/p>\n

But what does this feedback loop really mean? Author\u00a0Antony Loewenstein<\/a>\u00a0has explored Israel\u2019s continuous testing and development of tech systems\u00a0in his book<\/a>\u00a0The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation Around the World<\/i>, which describes how occupied\u00a0Palestine<\/a>\u00a0is used as a brutal testing ground for military technology.<\/p>\n

And yet, despite the ongoing\u00a0genocide in Gaza<\/a>, Israel\u2019s economy is still celebrated by international financial institutions and knowledge indices. The latest\u00a0Global Innovation Index<\/a>, published by a UN agency, ranks Israel 14th out of 139 economies; among northern African and western Asian countries, it ranks first.<\/p>\n

Automated repression<\/h3>\n

Separately, the UN has acknowledged the role of corporate entities in sustaining Israel\u2019s illegal\u00a0occupation<\/a>\u00a0and ongoing\u00a0genocidal<\/a>\u00a0campaign.<\/p>\n

In a report published last summer, titled \u201cFrom economy of occupation to economy of genocide\u201d, UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese\u00a0described<\/a>\u00a0Israel\u2019s military-industrial complex as the state\u2019s \u201ceconomic backbone\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cRepression of Palestinians has become progressively automated, with tech companies providing dual-use infrastructure to integrate mass data collection and surveillance, while profiting from the unique testing ground for military technology offered by the occupied Palestinian territory,\u201d the report noted, adding that this economy is \u201cfuelled by United States tech giants establishing subsidiaries and research and development centres in Israel\u201d.<\/p>\n

A recent\u00a0article<\/a>\u00a0published on the Israeli business news site Calcalist perfectly described the situation, noting that the country\u2019s tech sector has \u201cturned crisis into catalyst\u201d, with 2025 recording a surge in mergers, acquisitions and initial public offerings.<\/p>\n

Defence-driven innovation has played a key role, the report noted: \u201cIsrael\u2019s ability to integrate military research with civilian entrepreneurship proved decisive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Contrary to standard neoliberal structural reform recipes, the \u201cenduring synergy\u201d between the state\u2019s public and private sectors – especially in research and development – seems to be a successful strategy for Israel.<\/p>\n

But what does this economic comeback really show? Foreign investors appear convinced that the tech-driven Israeli economy can deliver – but deliver what, exactly?<\/p>\n

The answer today is clear:\u00a0genocide<\/a>\u00a0of the Palestinian people.<\/p>\n
