Israel\u2019s yearslong assault on\u00a0Gaza<\/a>\u00a0has killed more than 38,000 women and girls, according to a\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0released Friday by the\u00a0United Nations<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In total, the UN found that at least 22,000 women and 16,000 girls have been killed in the conflict, an average of nearly 50 women and girls per day.<\/p>\n

Sofia Calltorp, chief of humanitarian action at UN Women,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0the report shows how Israel\u2019s war on\u00a0Gaza<\/a>\u00a0\u201chas affected every aspect of life, with its most horrific toll seen in the scale of death.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWomen and girls accounted for a proportion of deaths far higher than those observed in previous conflicts in Gaza,\u201d Calltorp emphasized. \u201cThose killed were mothers, they were daughters, sisters, and friends\u2014deeply loved by those around them. They were individuals with lives and with dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 72,000 people in total have been\u00a0killed<\/a>\u00a0since Israel launched its attack on Gaza in October 2023, after\u00a0Hamas<\/a>\u00a0invaded Israeli territory and killed approximately 1,200 Israelis. Experts\u00a0warn<\/a>\u00a0that the current known death toll is likely an undercount.<\/p>\n

While Palestinian women and girls represent more than half of those who have been killed, according to the report, Israeli and US officials have persisted in claiming the US-backed assault has targeted Hamas fighters.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot a single combatant among them,\u201d\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0Ramy Abdul, chairman of the Euro-Mediterranean\u00a0Human Rights<\/a>\u00a0Monitor. \u201cFurther confirmation that over 90% of the victims are innocent civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although a ceasefire has been in place since October 2025, the report notes that an estimated 730 Gaza residents have been killed over the last six months. Additionally, the report says the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire.<\/p>\n

\u201cNearly one million women and girls have been displaced, repeatedly,\u201d said Calltorp. \u201cAccess to\u00a0water<\/a>\u00a0and food have been severely limited, with nearly 790,000 women and girls experiencing crisis-level or catastrophic levels of food insecurity. Extensive damage to\u00a0infrastructure<\/a>\u00a0has made it almost impossible for women and girls in Gaza to access their basic needs, like\u00a0healthcare<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Calltorp demanded that the ceasefire deal \u201cbe fully implemented,\u201d and that \u201crespect for\u00a0international law<\/a>\u00a0must be upheld\u201d to ease the suffering in Gaza.<\/p>\n

\u201cHumanitarian assistance must reach those in need\u2014at scale and without obstruction,\u201d Calltorp said. \u201cAnd women and girls must be placed at the center of response and recovery efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to causing a humanitarian disaster in Gaza, Israel in recent weeks has also been waging an aerial bombing and ground invasion in\u00a0Lebanon<\/a>\u00a0that has killed thousands of people and displaced more than 1 million. US President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0announced on Thursday that Israel and Lebanon came to a\u00a0ceasefire<\/a>\u00a0agreement that is set to last for 10 days.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Israeli settlers have been waging a campaign of increased violence against\u00a0Palestinians<\/a>\u00a0living in the\u00a0West Bank<\/a>, and veteran Israeli war correspondent Ron Ben-Yishai on Thursday declared that the actions of the settlers\u00a0look<\/a>\u00a0like \u201cethnic cleansing<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
