The Israeli military bombed Iran on Monday shortly after US President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0urged Israeli Prime Minister\u00a0Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>\u00a0not to respond to an Iranian missile barrage, which came in retaliation for Israel\u2019s earlier bombing of\u00a0Beirut<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am going to call Bibi right now and tell him not to retaliate,\u201d Trump told Axios on Sunday, noting that the Iranian strikes did not appear to cause any injuries. \u201cEach of them had their fun. Israel had its strike, and Iran had its strike. We don\u2019t need another one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s\u00a0missile attack on Israel<\/a>\u00a0was the first since a tenuous ceasefire agreement took effect in early April, and the exchange intensified concerns of a return to full-blown regional war. Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0the Sunday strikes were a defensive response to the Israeli military\u2019s bombing of southern Beirut as well as \u201cIsrael\u2019s persistent breaches of the April ceasefire, including its collaboration with the\u00a0US military<\/a>\u00a0in attacks on Iranian ships and targets in southern Iran over the past two weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Israel Defense Forces<\/a>\u00a0vowed<\/a>\u00a0to \u201ccontinue to operate all across\u00a0Lebanon<\/a>\u201d and said it would not \u201callow fire toward Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Esmail Baghaei, a spokesperson for Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0during a press conference on Monday that despite Trump\u2019s public comments, \u201cno one in the region believes\u201d that Israel attacked Lebanon or Iran \u201cwithout prior coordination and cooperation with the\u00a0United States<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States bears responsibility as a party to the April 8 ceasefire understanding,\u201d said Baghaei. \u201cWhatever happens in the region, whether the US itself violates the ceasefire by attacking Iranian commercial ships or targeting southern parts of the country, or whether violations are carried out through the Zionist regime in Lebanon with US complicity, the direct responsibility of the United States is clear, and the consequences of any escalation will also fall on Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0the Financial Times following Iran\u2019s missile attack on Israel that he did not believe it would undercut the prospects of a diplomatic agreement. The US president also said Netanyahu would have no choice but to accept any agreement the\u00a0Trump administration<\/a>\u00a0reaches with Iran, declaring: \u201cI call the shots. I call all the shots. [Netanyahu] doesn\u2019t call the shots.\u201d<\/p>\n

But critics of Trump\u2019s illegal and costly war of choice in Iran, which he launched in coordination with Israel in late February, said Netanyahu\u2019s swift defiance of the president\u2019s call for restraint underscored how disastrous the conflict has been for the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis war has been humiliating for Trump and American power generally,\u201d US Sen.\u00a0Chris Murphy<\/a>\u00a0(D-Conn.) wrote on\u00a0social media<\/a>. \u201cAnd when Trump announces he is going to call Netanyahu and tell him not to retaliate, and within hours Netanyahu retaliates, the humiliation just compounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, wrote in a\u00a0blog post<\/a>\u00a0following the Israeli attack on Iran that Trump \u201cappears unwilling to spend the political capital necessary to rein in Netanyahu\u2014beyond angry phone calls and tough public statements\u2014unless he knows that he has a deal with Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom Trump\u2019s perspective, it is only worth doing if an agreement with Iran is already secured. In short, Trump is willing to restrain Israel to preserve a deal,\u00a0but not to obtain one.\u00a0<\/em>Iran, however, wants evidence that Trump can restrain Israel\u00a0before agreeing to a deal<\/em>,\u201d Parsi wrote. \u201cAs a result, the most likely scenario is another round of Iranian and Israeli strikes, with Trump declining to meaningfully constrain Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n

The National Iranian American Council\u00a0noted<\/a>\u00a0that Iran\u2019s leadership \u201chas already threatened a broader and more destructive campaign\u201d in response to Israel\u2019s strikes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe coming 24 to 72 hours will likely determine whether this becomes a contained crisis or the beginning of a new phase in the regional conflict,\u201d the group added.<\/p>\n
