Some people wrongly attribute these blessings to someone or something other than their Creator, and this becomes a source of misguidance.

One of the customs of the people of Jahiliyyah was to attribute rainfall to the stars. They believed that rain came because of certain stars or their positions in the sky. This practice is known as seeking rain through the stars (al-istisqa’ bil-anwa’). If they believed the stars caused the rain, they would seek rain from them.

Allah says:

“And you make your denial your share of the provision.” (Qur’an 56:82)

This means that instead of thanking Allah for His provision, they responded with denial. True gratitude requires acknowledging that every blessing comes from Allah alone.

Abu Malik al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“There are four practices from the time of Jahiliyyah that will remain among my nation…”

This means that some Muslims may fall into practices that were common before Islam. These practices are sinful, but committing them does not necessarily remove a person from Islam. Just as some believers may display characteristics found among unbelievers, some unbelievers may also possess good qualities.

The Prophet ﷺ mentioned:

Pride in ancestry. This means boasting about one’s family, forefathers, or tribal lineage and looking down on others because of them. Pride is forbidden. A Muslim should thank Allah for His blessings instead of boasting about them.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“I am the leader of the children of Adam, and this is not out of pride.”

He was the greatest of all human beings, and Allah commanded him to inform his nation of this fact. He immediately clarified that he was not speaking out of arrogance. Since no prophet would come after him to mention his virtues, Allah instructed him to convey them himself. A Muslim should never boast, because boasting reflects weakness in faith and understanding.

A believer should realize that every blessing is a gift from Allah. He grants it to whom He wills and withholds it from whom He wills. Therefore, gratitude should be shown not only with words but also by using these blessings in obedience to Allah, not as a reason for arrogance or looking down on others.

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

“Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians exaggerated in praising Jesus, the son of Mary.”

The word hasab refers to honorable qualities found in one’s family, such as courage, generosity, and righteousness, while nasab refers to one’s lineage. Boasting is forbidden in every matter, but it often occurs with family status and ancestry. Some people who lack personal achievements try to compensate by saying, “I am the son of so-and-so,” or “I belong to such-and-such family.” In reality, a person benefits only from his own deeds, not from the achievements of others.

Insulting people’s lineage. This includes falsely attributing children to someone other than their real fathers or speaking contemptuously about people’s families or tribes. Nevertheless, such behavior remains common among ignorant people.

Seeking rain through the stars. Some believe that certain stars bring down the rain.
