It occupies 650\u00a0km<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0(250\u00a0sq\u00a0mi) on the\u00a0<a title=\"Deccan Plateau\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deccan_Plateau\">Deccan Plateau<\/a>\u00a0along the banks of the\u00a0<a title=\"Musi River (India)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Musi_River_(India)\">Musi River<\/a>, in the northern part of Southern India. With an average altitude of 536\u00a0m (1,759\u00a0ft), much of Hyderabad is situated on hilly terrain around\u00a0<a title=\"Lakes in Hyderabad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lakes_in_Hyderabad\">artificial lakes<\/a>, including the\u00a0<a title=\"Hussain Sagar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hussain_Sagar\">Hussain Sagar<\/a>\u00a0lake, predating the city&#8217;s founding, in the north of the city centre. According to the\u00a0<a title=\"2011 census of India\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2011_census_of_India\">2011 census of India<\/a>, Hyderabad is the\u00a0<a title=\"List of cities in India by population\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_cities_in_India_by_population\">fourth-most populous city in India<\/a>\u00a0with a population of\u00a0<span class=\"nowrap\">6.9 million<\/span>\u00a0residents within the city limits, and has a population of\u00a0<span class=\"nowrap\">9.7 million<\/span>\u00a0residents in the\u00a0<a title=\"Hyderabad Metropolitan Region\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad_Metropolitan_Region\">metropolitan region<\/a>, making it the\u00a0<a title=\"List of metropolitan areas in India\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_metropolitan_areas_in_India\">sixth-most populous metropolitan area<\/a>\u00a0in India. With an output of\u00a0US$\u00a095 billion,<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-6\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>5<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-7\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>6<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Hyderabad has the sixth-largest urban economy in\u00a0<a title=\"India\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/India\">India<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Qutb Shahi dynasty&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_Quli_Qutb_Shah\">Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah<\/a>\u00a0established Hyderabad in 1591 to extend the capital beyond the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Golconda Fort\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golconda_Fort\">fortified Golconda<\/a>. In 1687,\u00a0<a title=\"Siege of Golconda\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siege_of_Golconda\">the city was annexed<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0<a title=\"Mughal Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mughal_Empire\">Mughals<\/a>. In 1724,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Asaf Jah I\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asaf_Jah_I\">Asaf Jah I<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"Viceroy of the Deccan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Viceroy_of_the_Deccan\">Mughal viceroy<\/a>, declared his sovereignty and founded the\u00a0<a title=\"Asaf Jahi dynasty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asaf_Jahi_dynasty\">Asaf Jahi dynasty<\/a>, also known as the\u00a0<a title=\"Nizam of Hyderabad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nizam_of_Hyderabad\">Nizams<\/a>. Hyderabad served as the imperial capital of the Asaf Jahis from 1769 to 1948. As the capital of the\u00a0<a title=\"Hyderabad State\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad_State\">princely state of Hyderabad<\/a>, the city housed the\u00a0<a title=\"British Residency, Hyderabad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Residency,_Hyderabad\">British Residency<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Secunderabad Cantonment Board\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Secunderabad_Cantonment_Board\">cantonment<\/a>\u00a0until\u00a0<a title=\"Indian Independence Act 1947\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_Independence_Act_1947\">Indian independence<\/a>\u00a0in 1947.\u00a0<a title=\"Annexation of Hyderabad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Annexation_of_Hyderabad\">Hyderabad was annexed<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0<a title=\"Dominion of India\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominion_of_India\">Indian Union<\/a>\u00a0in 1948 and continued as a capital of\u00a0<a title=\"Hyderabad State (1948\u20131956)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad_State_(1948%E2%80%931956)\">Hyderabad State<\/a>\u00a0from 1948 to 1956. After\u00a0<a title=\"Gentlemen's Agreement of 1956\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gentlemen%27s_Agreement_of_1956\">the introduction<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a title=\"States Reorganisation Act, 1956\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/States_Reorganisation_Act,_1956\">States Reorganisation Act of 1956<\/a>, Hyderabad was made the capital of the\u00a0<a title=\"Andhra Pradesh (1956\u20132014)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andhra_Pradesh_(1956%E2%80%932014)\">newly formed Andhra Pradesh<\/a>. In 2014,\u00a0<a title=\"Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andhra_Pradesh_Reorganisation_Act,_2014\">Andhra Pradesh was split<\/a>\u00a0to form the state of Telangana, and Hyderabad became the joint capital of the two states until 2024.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-8\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>7<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Since 1956, the city has housed the\u00a0<a title=\"Rashtrapati Nilayam\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rashtrapati_Nilayam\">Rashtrapati Nilayam<\/a>, the winter office of the\u00a0<a title=\"President of India\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/President_of_India\">president of India<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Relics of the Qutb Shahi and Nizam eras remain visible today; the\u00a0<a title=\"Charminar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charminar\">Charminar<\/a>\u00a0has come to symbolise the city. By the end of the early modern era, the Mughal Empire had declined in the Deccan, and the Nizam&#8217;s patronage attracted men of letters from various parts of the world.\u00a0<a title=\"Culture of Hyderabad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Culture_of_Hyderabad\">A distinctive culture<\/a>\u00a0arose from the amalgamation of local and migrated artisans, with\u00a0<a title=\"Deccan painting\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deccan_painting\">painting<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Bidriware\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bidriware\">handicraft<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Jewels of the Nizams of Hyderabad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewels_of_the_Nizams_of_Hyderabad\">jewellery<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Deccani Masnavi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deccani_Masnavi\">literature<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Deccani language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deccani_language\">dialect<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Clothing of Hyderabad, India\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clothing_of_Hyderabad,_India\">clothing<\/a>\u00a0prominent even today. For\u00a0<a title=\"Hyderabadi cuisine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabadi_cuisine\">its cuisine<\/a>, the city is listed as a\u00a0<a title=\"City of Gastronomy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/City_of_Gastronomy\">creative city of gastronomy<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a title=\"UNESCO\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UNESCO\">UNESCO<\/a>. The\u00a0<a title=\"Telugu cinema\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Telugu_cinema\">Telugu film industry<\/a>\u00a0based in the city is the highest-grossing film industry in India as of 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Until the\u00a0<span class=\"nowrap\">19th century<\/span>, Hyderabad was known for its\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Hyderabad pearls\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad_pearls\">pearl industry<\/a>\u00a0and was nicknamed the &#8220;City of Pearls&#8221;, and was the only trading centre for\u00a0<a title=\"Golconda diamonds\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golconda_diamonds\">Golconda diamonds<\/a>\u00a0in the world. Hyderabad and its surroundings was ruled by the\u00a0<a title=\"Chalukya dynasty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chalukya_dynasty\">Chalukya dynasty<\/a>\u00a0from 624\u00a0<a title=\"Common Era\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Common_Era\">CE<\/a>\u00a0to 1075\u00a0CE.<sup id=\"cite_ref-kolluru_22-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-kolluru-22\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>21<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Following the dissolution of the Chalukya empire into four parts in the 11th century, Golconda\u2014now part of Hyderabad\u2014came under the control of the\u00a0<a title=\"Kakatiya dynasty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kakatiya_dynasty\">Kakatiya dynasty<\/a>\u00a0from 1158, whose seat of power was at\u00a0<a title=\"Warangal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Warangal\">Warangal<\/a>\u2014148\u00a0km (92\u00a0mi) northeast of modern Hyderabad.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Golctime_23-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-Golctime-23\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>22<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The Kakatiya ruler\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ganapatideva\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ganapatideva\">Ganapatideva<\/a>\u00a0(1199\u20131262) built a\u00a0<a title=\"Hilltop castle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hilltop_castle\">hilltop<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Outpost (military)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Outpost_(military)\">outpost<\/a>\u2014later known as\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Golconda Fort\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golconda_Fort\">Golconda Fort<\/a>\u2014to defend their western region.<sup id=\"cite_ref-yimene_20-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-yimene-20\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>19<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Kakatiya dynasty was reduced to a vassal of the\u00a0<a title=\"Khalji dynasty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khalji_dynasty\">Khalji dynasty<\/a>\u00a0in 1310 after its defeat by Sultan\u00a0<a title=\"Alauddin Khalji\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alauddin_Khalji\">Alauddin Khalji<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a title=\"Delhi Sultanate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delhi_Sultanate\">Delhi Sultanate<\/a>. This lasted until 1321 when the Kakatiya dynasty was annexed by\u00a0<a title=\"Malik Kafur\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malik_Kafur\">Malik Kafur<\/a>, Khalji&#8217;s general.<sup id=\"cite_ref-medival_India_24-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-medival_India-24\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>23<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0During this period, Khalji took the\u00a0<i><a title=\"Koh-i-Noor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Koh-i-Noor\">Koh-i-Noor<\/a><\/i>\u00a0diamond, which is said to have been mined from the\u00a0<a title=\"Kollur Mine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kollur_Mine\">Kollur Mines<\/a>\u00a0of Golconda, to Delhi.<sup id=\"cite_ref-25\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-25\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>24<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<a title=\"Muhammad bin Tughluq\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_bin_Tughluq\">Muhammad bin Tughluq<\/a>\u00a0succeeded to the Delhi sultanate in 1325, bringing Warangal under the rule of the\u00a0<a title=\"Tughlaq dynasty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tughlaq_dynasty\">Tughlaq dynasty<\/a>;\u00a0<a title=\"Malik Maqbul Tilangani\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malik_Maqbul_Tilangani\">Malik Maqbul Tilangani<\/a>\u00a0was appointed its governor. In 1336 the regional chieftains\u00a0<a title=\"Musunuri Nayakas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Musunuri_Nayakas\">Musunuri Nayakas<\/a>\u2014who revolted against the Delhi sultanate in 1333\u2014took Warangal under their direct control and declared it as their capital.<sup id=\"cite_ref-26\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-26\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>25<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 1347 when\u00a0<a title=\"Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ala-ud-Din_Bahman_Shah\">Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah<\/a>, a governor under bin Tughluq, rebelled against Delhi and established the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Bahmani Sultanate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bahmani_Sultanate\">Bahmani Sultanate<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a title=\"Deccan Plateau\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deccan_Plateau\">Deccan Plateau<\/a>, with\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Gulbarga\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gulbarga\">Gulbarga<\/a>\u2014200\u00a0km (124\u00a0mi) west of Hyderabad\u2014as its capital, both the neighbouring rulers Musunuri Nayakas of Warangal and Bahmani Sultans of Gulbarga engaged in many wars until 1364\u201365 when a peace treaty was signed and the Musunuri Nayakas ceded Golconda Fort to the Bahmani Sultan. With the introduction of railways in the 1880s, four factories were built to the south and east of\u00a0<a title=\"Hussain Sagar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hussain_Sagar\">Hussain Sagar<\/a>\u00a0lake,<sup id=\"cite_ref-47\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-47\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>46<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and during the early 20th century, Hyderabad was transformed into a modern city with the establishment of\u00a0<a title=\"Nizam State Railways - Road Transport Division\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nizam_State_Railways_-_Road_Transport_Division\">transport services<\/a>, underground drainage, running water,\u00a0<a title=\"Hussain Sagar Thermal Power Station\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hussain_Sagar_Thermal_Power_Station\">electricity<\/a>, telecommunications, universities, industries, and\u00a0<a title=\"Begumpet Airport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Begumpet_Airport\">Begumpet Airport<\/a>. The\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Nizams\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nizams\">Nizams<\/a>\u00a0ruled the\u00a0<a title=\"Princely state\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Princely_state\">princely state<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a title=\"Hyderabad State\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad_State\">Hyderabad<\/a>\u00a0during the\u00a0<a title=\"British Raj\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Raj\">British Raj<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Richards_41-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-Richards-41\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>40<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-columbia&amp;TOI_45-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-columbia&amp;TOI-45\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>44<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<div class=\"mw-heading mw-heading4\">\n<h4 id=\"Post-Independence\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Post-Independence<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After India\u00a0<a title=\"Indian independence movement\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_independence_movement\">gained independence<\/a>, the Nizam declared his intention to remain independent rather than become part of the\u00a0<a title=\"Dominion of India\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominion_of_India\">Indian Union<\/a>\u00a0or newly formed\u00a0<a title=\"Dominion of Pakistan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominion_of_Pakistan\">Dominion of Pakistan<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Reg_Sal_Geo_46-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-Reg_Sal_Geo-46\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>45<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The Hyderabad State Congress, with the support of the\u00a0<a title=\"Indian National Congress\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_National_Congress\">Indian National Congress<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a title=\"Communist Party of India\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Communist_Party_of_India\">Communist Party of India<\/a>, began agitating against\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Osman_Ali_Khan,_Asaf_Jah_VII\">Nizam VII<\/a>\u00a0in 1948. On 17 September that year, the Indian Army took control of Hyderabad State after an invasion codenamed\u00a0<a title=\"Annexation of Hyderabad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Annexation_of_Hyderabad\">Operation Polo<\/a>. With the defeat of his forces, Nizam VII capitulated to the Indian Union by signing an\u00a0<a title=\"Instrument of Accession\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Instrument_of_Accession\">Instrument of Accession<\/a>, which made him the\u00a0<i><a title=\"Rajpramukh\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rajpramukh\">Rajpramukh<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(Princely Governor) of the state until it was abolished on 31 October 1956.<sup id=\"cite_ref-columbia&amp;TOI_45-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-columbia&amp;TOI-45\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>44<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-48\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-48\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>47<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Between 1946 and 1951, the Communist Party of India fomented the\u00a0<a title=\"Telangana Rebellion\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Telangana_Rebellion\">Telangana uprising<\/a>\u00a0against the\u00a0<a title=\"Indian feudalism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_feudalism\">feudal<\/a>\u00a0lords of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Telangana region\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Telangana_region\">Telangana region<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-49\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-49\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>48<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0<a title=\"Constitution of India\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constitution_of_India\">Constitution of India<\/a>, which became effective on 26 January 1950, made Hyderabad State one of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Part B states\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Part_B_states\">part B states<\/a>\u00a0of India, with Hyderabad city continuing to be the capital.<sup id=\"cite_ref-50\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-50\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>49<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In his 1955 report\u00a0<i>Thoughts on Linguistic States<\/i>,\u00a0<a title=\"B. R. Ambedkar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/B._R._Ambedkar\">B. R. Ambedkar<\/a>, then chairman of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drafting_Committee_of_the_Indian_Constitution\">Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution<\/a>, proposed designating the city of Hyderabad as the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Second capital\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_capital\">second capital<\/a>\u00a0of India because of its amenities and strategic central location.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Mahesh_Ambedkar_51-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-Mahesh_Ambedkar-51\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>50<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On 1 November 1956 the states of India\u00a0<a title=\"States Reorganisation Act, 1956\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/States_Reorganisation_Act,_1956\">were reorganised<\/a>\u00a0by language. Hyderabad state was split into three parts, which were merged with neighbouring states to form\u00a0<a title=\"Maharashtra\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maharashtra\">Maharashtra<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Karnataka\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karnataka\">Karnataka<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Andhra Pradesh (1956\u20132014)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andhra_Pradesh_(1956%E2%80%932014)\">Andhra Pradesh<\/a>. The nine\u00a0<a title=\"Telugu language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Telugu_language\">Telugu<\/a>&#8211; and\u00a0<a title=\"Urdu\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urdu\">Urdu<\/a>-speaking districts of Hyderabad State in the Telangana region were merged with the Telugu-speaking\u00a0<a title=\"Andhra State\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andhra_State\">Andhra State<\/a>\u00a0to create Andhra Pradesh,<sup id=\"cite_ref-52\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-52\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>51<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-53\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-53\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>52<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-54\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-54\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>53<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0with Hyderabad as its capital. Several protests, known collectively as the\u00a0<a title=\"Telangana movement\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Telangana_movement\">Telangana movement<\/a>, attempted to invalidate the merger and demanded the creation of a new Telangana state. Major actions took place in 1969 and 1972, and a third began in 2010.<sup id=\"cite_ref-55\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-55\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>54<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0On 30 July 2013 the government of India declared that part of Andhra Pradesh would be split off to form a new Telangana state and that Hyderabad city would be the capital city and part of Telangana, while the city would also remain the capital of Andhra Pradesh for no more than ten years. On 3 October 2013 the Union Cabinet approved the proposal,<sup id=\"cite_ref-56\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyderabad#cite_note-56\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>55<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and in February 2014 both houses of\u00a0<a title=\"Parliament of India\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parliament_of_India\">Parliament<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Act of Parliament\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Act_of_Parliament\">passed<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<a title=\"Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andhra_Pradesh_Reorganisation_Act,_2014\">Telangana Bill<\/a>.
