The five republics of the region\u2014Uzbekistan,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/silk-road-rivalries\/can-kazakhstan-help-de-escalate-irans-nuclear-crisis\">Kazakhstan<\/a>, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan\u2014have increasingly pursued a strategy of multi-vector diplomacy, seeking to balance relations with competing major powers. Yet the escalating confrontation between Iran and Israel threatens to constrict the geopolitical space Central Asia has carefully carved out for itself.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Amid global turbulence, particularly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/silk-road-rivalries\/is-central-asia-the-next-target-of-russian-aggression\">Russia\u2019s<\/a>\u00a02022 invasion of Ukraine, Central Asian states have accelerated efforts to diversify trade, attract new partners, and strengthen regional cooperation.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/silk-road-rivalries\/is-the-eu-beating-the-u-s-in-central-asia\">High-level summits<\/a>, cross-border infrastructure projects, and<a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2024\/08\/a-coordinated-silence-in-central-asia-amid-ukraines-kursk-incursion\/\">\u00a0coordinated<\/a>\u00a0foreign policy efforts\u2014especially in the domains of connectivity,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/en\/publications\/2023\/12\/trade-facilitation-in-central-asia_93190ff4.html\">\u00a0commerce<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/kun.uz\/en\/news\/2025\/04\/24\/tashkent-hosts-first-meeting-of-central-asian-intelligence-chiefs\">\u00a0security<\/a>\u2014have collectively signaled a region reaching for greater strategic autonomy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But autonomy hinges on viable options. And one of those options\u2014Iran\u2014is now in a vulnerable state. If last month\u2019s Iran-Israel confrontation had escalated into a broader regional conflict, it would have severely curtailed Central Asia\u2019s strategic maneuverability, disrupted critical trade routes, and forced the region into geopolitical choices it has long sought to avoid.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<h3 id=\"h-a-war-that-isn-t-theirs-but-costs-them-dearly\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>A War That Isn\u2019t Theirs\u2014But Costs Them Dearly<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The fallout from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/middle-east-watch\/the-fallout-of-operation-midnight-hammer\">Israel\u2019s preemptive strikes<\/a>\u00a0on Iranian territory in June 2025 is already reshaping regional calculations. While Central Asian governments have maintained formal<a href=\"https:\/\/www.specialeurasia.com\/2025\/06\/14\/central-asia-israel-iran-war\/\">\u00a0neutrality<\/a>, they are anything but insulated. Iran is a central node in the region\u2019s emerging trade and transit architecture. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/middle-east-watch\/russias-north-south-trade-corridor-with-iran-may-never-happen\">North-South Transport Corridor<\/a>\u00a0(NSTC)\u2014running through Iran to Gulf ports and Turkey\u2014remains the shortest and most cost-effective route for Central Asia\u2019s maritime access to the Gulf and further, at a time when the northern corridor through Russia remains under sanction, Chinese lending is slowing, and Western aid is in retreat.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is where the contradictions begin to pile up. Over the past two years, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/silk-road-rivalries\/the-gcc-and-central-asia-in-search-of-strategic-autonomy\">Gulf Cooperation Council<\/a>\u00a0(GCC) states\u2014Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar\u2014have emerged as Central Asia\u2019s most active new partners, pledging billions of dollars in investments in renewable energy, gas pipelines, agribusiness, and infrastructure. This surge of Gulf capital has raised optimism of replicating or even surpassing China\u2019s peak\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/feature\/what-us-can-learn-chinese-development-playbook-212362\">Belt and Road-era<\/a>\u00a0engagement. Yet much of this investment is mainly contingent on infrastructure corridors that pass through Iran, the very route now threatened by military escalation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"ld-6079-1555\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Despite their ambitions in Central Asia, GCC states remain tethered to US security guarantees and are unlikely to jeopardize that alliance by routing cargo or capital through Iranian territory. This creates a strategic bottleneck. Central Asia\u2019s diversification efforts and export-led growth strategies are being hemmed in by a conflict it neither provoked nor controls.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Alternative routes, such as the Trans-Afghan Corridor and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mecouncil.org\/publication\/iraqs-development-road-project-a-path-to-prosperity-or-instability\/\">Iraq\u2019s Development Road Project<\/a>\u00a0(DRP), are under construction but face daunting challenges. The Afghan route, backed by Qatar, the UAE, and Uzbekistan, remains primarily vulnerable to security risks. The DRP through Iraq and Turkey is geopolitically cumbersome and logistically inefficient. For now, Iran remains the most viable transit option\u2014but also the most politically toxic and precarious.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Caught between the promise of Gulf financing and the risks of Iranian proximity, Central Asian leaders find themselves navigating a narrowing path. Their most strategic connectivity route is increasingly unusable, while the promised alternatives remain unfinished or uncertain.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<h3 id=\"h-the-iran-dilemma-with-russian-and-chinese-characteristics\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The Iran Dilemma, With Russian and Chinese Characteristics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Iran\u2019s importance to Central Asia goes beyond logistics. It is a close partner to the region\u2019s two most influential actors\u2014Russia and China. Moscow and Tehran are now openly coordinating military operations, and Beijing continues to rely on Iran for energy security and as a key component of its Belt and Road Initiative. As the West hardens its pro-Israel stance and moves to isolate Iran further, Central Asia may come under increasing pressure from the Sino-Russian axis to align more clearly.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"ld-526-3637\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This tension is already straining institutional frameworks. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which includes four Central Asian states alongside China, Russia, and Iran, is fraying under the weight of divergent positions.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asiatimes.com\/2025\/06\/india-breaks-with-china-russia-on-israel-iran-war\/?fbclid=IwQ0xDSwK805tleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHrctKxsiaAAMNCOZbSCi1zNZrgIQsBpHclZ5YZkn3G76QdhAlHsVzjrqv01Q_aem_wIgJxZhxLZZ4FlW4kqOoYA\">Pakistan<\/a>\u00a0tilts toward Iran;<a href=\"https:\/\/asiatimes.com\/2025\/06\/india-breaks-with-china-russia-on-israel-iran-war\/?fbclid=IwQ0xDSwK805tleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHrctKxsiaAAMNCOZbSCi1zNZrgIQsBpHclZ5YZkn3G76QdhAlHsVzjrqv01Q_aem_wIgJxZhxLZZ4FlW4kqOoYA\">\u00a0India<\/a>\u00a0hedges its bets; and the organization\u2019s silence on the Gaza war underscores its diminishing coherence. Should the Iran-Israel conflict deepen, Central Asia may be forced into the kind of explicit geopolitical alignment it has long resisted.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<h3 id=\"h-public-sympathy-and-the-foreign-policy-puzzle\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Public Sympathy and the Foreign Policy Puzzle<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Domestic politics add another layer of complexity. Central Asia\u2019s populations\u2014majority-Muslim but governed by secular regimes\u2014are watching developments in Gaza and Tehran with rising discomfort. A recent regional<a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/faeasfokus\/2684\">\u00a0survey<\/a>\u00a0by the \u201cFOKUS\u201d center (May-June 2025) reveals fragmented yet notable sympathy for Iran.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, about 43 percent of respondents support political alignment with Tehran. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/silk-road-rivalries\/inside-uzbekistans-deepening-ties-with-china\">Uzbekistan<\/a>, public skepticism prevails, with 39 percent of the population opposing such an alignment. Support for direct military engagement remains low, but the significant proportion of undecided respondents\u2014especially the 25 percent in Kyrgyzstan\u2014suggests growing uncertainty and latent volatility.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">These public sentiments could soon have significant political implications. Leaders striving to maintain neutrality may find themselves increasingly pressured, either rhetorically or diplomatically, by their domestic audiences if Iran is viewed as increasingly victimized by Western or Israeli aggression. Sustaining quiet balancing acts is becoming more challenging under the scrutiny of public opinion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This tension has already prompted official concern. In a June 17<a href=\"https:\/\/anhor.uz\/news\/it-is-not-about-religion\/?fbclid=IwQ0xDSwK-YhVleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHrB8QrVMfOYHt6MOb1SWP0D6jmrOB-6VDs9fsiKk1hy2aNuqNWrWArDaHwcW_aem_mU70YiPngw-PLO2QzGWlDg\">\u00a0statement<\/a>, Uzbekistan\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs addressed the intensifying discourse on social media, warning that the conflict was taking on ideological and sectarian overtones. Citizens were urged to remain calm, avoid viewing the conflict through the lens of religion or ideology, and rely on verified information, while adhering to official communication channels. This carefully worded appeal reflects the government\u2019s anxiety that unmanaged public discourse could lead to political instability or erode its neutral foreign policy stance.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<h3 id=\"h-strategic-autonomy-under-siege\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Strategic Autonomy Under Siege<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Central Asia\u2019s pursuit of strategic autonomy is not derailed, but it is under growing strain. Economic corridors are now politicized. Public sentiment is growing more volatile. And the traditional balancing act between great powers is becoming increasingly fraught.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the short term, Central Asian governments must accelerate efforts to diversify transit routes, ensuring they are less vulnerable to geopolitical shocks.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/silk-road-rivalries\/understanding-middle-corridor-213504\">The Middle Corridor<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eurasianet.org\/china-kyrgyzstan-uzbekistan-railway-officially-launched-but-sidetracked-at-least-until-summer\">China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geopoliticalmonitor.com\/trans-afghan-railway-central-asias-gateway-to-global-trade\/\">Trans-Afghan route<\/a>, along with enhanced air and digital connectivity, must become policy priorities\u2014not just infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the long term, regional resilience will require more than diplomatic hedging. It will require the consolidation of regional cooperation frameworks, stronger diplomatic agency in multilateral forums, and a deeper investment in strategic foresight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tni-poster\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Iran-Israel conflict did not begin in Central Asia.
