Demographics:<\/b><\/p>\n

The 2020 United States Religion Census estimates that there are 4.5 million Muslims in the United States.1<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0However, surveys funded by the American Jewish Committee, say Muslims are less than three million in America.2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

American Muslims are younger than all other communities:\u00a026\u00a0percent\u00a0of Muslims are between the ages of 18 and 24, compared with\u00a0two percent to\u00a012\u00a0percent\u00a0of other groups surveyed.3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Muslims are the\u00a0country\u2019s\u00a0most ethnically diverse faith community. One\u2013third of the American Muslim community is Black, one\u2013third is of South Asian descent, one\u2013quarter is of Arab descent, and the rest are from all over the world, including a growing Latino Muslim population.4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Forty-six percent\u00a0of Muslims have a college degree or higher, compared with 38\u00a0percent\u00a0of the general public.5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

A very significant part of the Muslim community in North America is in prison, since 30\u00a0percent\u00a0of all incarcerated African Americans are Muslims who have accepted Islam in prison in the tradition of Malik Shahbaz (Malcom X).6<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

There are 5,896 self-identified Muslims currently serving in the military, according to the Department of Defense.7<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Most Muslims\u00a0live in the\u00a0major cosmopolitan areas of\u00a0the U.S. The\u00a0largest number\u00a0are\u00a0in New York State, followed by California, Illinois, and New Jersey.8<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Forty-two percent of the\u00a0American Muslim population is born in\u00a0the United States. The rest are first generation immigrants.9<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Muslims\u2019 Income:<\/b><\/p>\n

Twenty-two percent of\u00a0Muslims earn $100,000 or more, as compared to 44\u00a0percent\u00a0of Jewish Americans who earn $100,000 or more. However, Muslims are also found among those living in poverty,\u00a0as 33\u00a0percent\u00a0of American Muslims have a household income lower than $30,000.\u00a010<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

There are, however, hundreds of Muslim millionaires in the United States,\u00a0along with at least\u00a0six\u00a0billionaires.<\/p>\n

Muslim women in the U.S. are equal to Muslim men in the lower income bracket,\u00a0and five percent behind Muslim men in the higher income bracket,\u00a0as compared to Jewish women who are 38\u00a0percent\u00a0behind Jewish men.11<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

More Muslim Americans are self-employed\u00a0than the general\u00a0population.12<\/a>\u00a0<\/sup>New York City has 96,000 Muslim-owned businesses. The\u00a0state of Michigan\u00a0has\u00a036,000.13<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Professional Background\u00a0<\/b>O<\/b>f Muslims:<\/b><\/p>\n

Professionally, Muslims in America\u00a0are versatile. However, engineering and\u00a0information technology\u00a0employ more than 10% of Muslims in America. Medicine-related fields engage\u00a0eight percent\u00a0of Muslims.14<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Estimates put the number of\u00a0American Muslim\u00a0physicians at nearly 50,000, or\u00a0five percent\u00a0of the physician workforce.15<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Masjids, Islamic Centers\u00a0<\/b>A<\/b>nd Schools<\/b><\/p>\n

There are about 2,771 masjids in the US16<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and\u00a0about 300 Islamic schools serving more than 50,000 students.17<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Seventy-six percent of American\u00a0masjids\u00a0offer weekend schools for children.18<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0There are\u00a0eight\u00a0Muslim seminaries and madrasas for\u00a0higher education\u00a0in America,\u00a0as well\u00a0as three\u00a0colleges and one university run by Muslims.<\/p>\n

Masjids in the United States\u00a0are often not just a place to pray\u00a0\u2013\u00a0they\u00a0are the center\u00a0of Muslim lives in America participating in coalitions, civic engagement, and social services. It was the masjids who provided seed funding for Justice For All, the country\u2019s only Muslim human rights organization.<\/p>\n

Practice\u00a0<\/b>O<\/b>f Islam:<\/b><\/p>\n

Shahadah<\/i>: There is a significant growth of Islam through new people\u00a0accepting Islam in America. In Illinois, a growth of about 25% in the Muslim population was found to be due to conversion. However, about 41% of these new Muslims in Illinois and 61% in the\u00a0state of New York leave Islam within a few years.19<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Salat<\/i>: In 2023, Gallup reported that 38\u00a0percent\u00a0Muslims attend Friday prayers on an almost weekly basis as compared to 44\u00a0percent of\u00a0Protestants and 67\u00a0of\u00a0Mormons attending\u00a0regular\u00a0church services.20<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0However, according to an older but more detailed survey of Muslims,\u00a0a far smaller number of Muslims offer Friday prayers: 9.8\u00a0percent of men\u00a0and 5.3 percent of\u00a0women attend weekly Friday prayers in America.21<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Zakat<\/i>:\u00a0Muslim Americans gave $1.8 billion in\u00a0Zakat funding to domestic and international causes in 2021.22<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Fasting<\/i>: About 47% of all Muslims in the U.S. fast in the month of Ramadan.23<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Muslims\u00a0<\/b>I<\/b>n Public Service:<\/b><\/p>\n

There are currently\u00a0four\u00a0Muslims serving\u00a0in the US Congress. No Muslim has ever been appointed\u00a0to a\u00a0cabinet level position in the\u00a0United States.<\/p>\n

President Joe Biden\u00a0did\u00a0appoint\u00a0the largest number of Muslims to a significant positions in his administration.<\/p>\n
