left;\">The people of Ecuador just delivered a major blow to Trump\u2019s aggressive Latin America strategy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">More than three-fifths of Ecuadorians voted to reject a change to their progressive constitution, which would have allowed the Pentagon to establish US military bases in their territory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Ecuador is currently governed by a right-wing president, Daniel Noboa, who is a key regional ally of Trump.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Noboa is the son of Ecuador\u2019s richest billionaire oligarch, \u00c1lvaro Noboa \u2014 who ran as a presidential candidate in five different elections on a hard-line right-wing platform, but lost every time (in 1998, In fact, just two months after he was inaugurated as president of Ecuador, Noboa returned to Miami so his wife, an Instagram influencer, could\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/es-us.noticias.yahoo.com\/noboa-viaja-miami-nacimiento-tercer-210327970.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">give birth to their child on US soil<\/a>, guaranteeing him US citizenship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As president, Noboa has been widely accused of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/feb\/06\/ecuador-election-president-daniel-noboa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">dictatorial tendencies<\/a>. Voters rejected all of them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The second measure sought to end public funding of political parties in Ecuador\u2019s elections, which would have given wealthy right-wing forces like the oligarchic Noboa dynasty even more power. That measure was rejected with 58% of the votes against it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Another measure proposed a constituent assembly to rewrite the entire constitution. That was rejected with 62% of the votes in opposition.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">The war on Ecuador\u2019s leftist former President Rafael Correa<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ecuador\u2019s current, progressive constitution was drafted during the government of socialist former President Rafael Correa, who served from 2007 to 2017.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When Correa campaigned for president in the 2006 election, a key part of his left-wing platform was a call for a constituent assembly to write a new constitution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A new, progressive constitution was approved in a 2008 referendum, with 64% of the votes in support, and just 28% against it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2009,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elciudadano.com\/pueblos\/correa-anuncia-la-salida-de-tropas-estadounidenses-de-base-de-manta-en-ecuador\/01\/16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Correa kicked US troops out of Ecuador<\/a>, and closed US military bases in his country\u2019s territory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Washington supported a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rebelion.org\/una-intentona-golpista-de-la-derecha-ecuatoriana-y-el-imperialismo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">failed right-wing coup attempt against Correa<\/a>\u00a0in 2010.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of Correa\u2019s right-wing opponents in the 2006, 2009, and 2013 elections \u2014 all of which he won by a large margin \u2014 was \u00c1lvaro Noboa, Ecuador\u2019s richest billionaire oligarch, and the father of current President Daniel Noboa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Correa, who has a PhD in economics, opposed neoliberalism and rejected Ecuador\u2019s history of taking on debt from the US-dominated International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Correa significantly reduced poverty, inequality, and violence. He declared a \u201cCitizens\u2019 Revolution\u201d, based on what he called \u201c21st-century socialism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">During Correa\u2019s three terms, Ecuador formed closed ties with China. The ALBA even created a new currency for regional trade, to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/2022\/12\/01\/latin-america-us-dollar-currency\/\">challenge the dominance of the US dollar<\/a>, called the Sucre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Today, Correa is living in exile as a victim of political persecution, because right-wing, US-backed authorities in Ecuador formally charged him with the \u201ccrime\u201d of so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g4nmsqMRbb8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">psychic influence<\/a>\u201d over his left-wing followers.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">The Trump administration revives the colonial Monroe Doctrine \u2014 and supports drug-trafficking oligarchs<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While all US presidents have intervened in Latin America and violated the sovereignty of countries in the region, Donald Trump has made this a key priority of his aggressive foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Trump administration has proudly sought to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/2025\/10\/27\/donroe-doctrine-trump-neocolonial-plan-latin-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">revive the 202-year Monroe Doctrine<\/a>, which treats Latin America as the colonial \u201cbackyard\u201d of the US empire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Trump has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/2025\/10\/20\/trump-cia-attack-venezuela-us-war\/\">waged war on Venezuela<\/a>, seeking to overthrow its President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro.
