I’ve been reading this Juan Cole article from November 28, titled \u201cAmnesty: So-<\/a>Called<\/strong> Gaza \u2018Ceasefire\u2019 Becoming a Smokescreen for Continued Israeli Genocide.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cole, the great scholar, writes an Amnesty International report in which Secretary General Agn\u00e8s\u00a0Callamard warns:<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cPalestinians remain held within less than half of the territory of Gaza, in the areas least capable of supporting life, with humanitarian aid still severely restricted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Callamard further cautions:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ceasefire risks creating a dangerous illusion that life in Gaza is returning to normal. But while Israeli authorities and forces have reduced the scale of their attacks and allowed limited amounts of humanitarian aid into Gaza, the world must not be fooled. Israel\u2019s genocide is not over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amnesty reports that the Israeli military continues to occupy roughly\u00a055%<\/strong>\u00a0of the Gaza Strip. There has been no effort to rehabilitate the farmland deliberately destroyed over the past two years or to rebuild livestock. Israeli forces routinely fire on Palestinian fishing boats, preventing them from accessing protein from the sea.<\/p>\n

In which they report that \u201cPalestinians are left virtually totally deprived of independent access to forms of sustenance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cole also details the harsh realities on the ground \u2014 food trucks unable to enter, aid convoys delayed, and basic supplies blocked despite repeated pleas for expanded access.<\/p>\n

After reading that, I received an alert from Democracy Now! about today\u2019s interview with\u00a0Sari Bashi<\/strong>, an Israeli American human rights lawyer, co-founder of Gisha, and former program director at Human Rights Watch. It\u2019s worth a listen.<\/p>\n

The ceasefire encourages people to assume the best \u2014 and certainly that\u2019s the framing the U.S. administration wants \u2014 but the truth is far more muddled. The reality feels like the same destructive policies, just with a different tagline.<\/p>\n

I wanted to include these key points from today\u2019s Democracy Now! conversation with Amy and Juan, where Bashi describes the Israeli government\u2019s intent to make life so unlivable that people are effectively forced to leave:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is decentralized violence, but it is also state-sponsored violence<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Israeli announcement that it will not allow people to return to Gaza validates the fears \u2026 that the ceasefire plan \u2026 is essentially to continue the ethnic cleansing of Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n

And:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe violence in Gaza, the violence in the West Bank \u2026 it\u2019s not random. It\u2019s directed toward ethnic cleansing. It\u2019s directed toward getting Palestinians to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n
