<\/p>\nEach day, we learn of Israel\u2019s theft of yet another slice of Palestine.\u00a0 Piece by piece, acre by acre, the Palestinian nation has been seized by Israeli offensive forces and carved up by Zionist colonizers in contravention of all treaties, accords, \u201cpeace\u201d agreements and the like.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Meanwhile, Israel remains accountable to no laws, no treaties and no global organizations. It takes what it wants, when it wants. It kills, destroys, pillage<\/span>s, imprison<\/span>s, rapes and\u00a0torture<\/span>s<\/a><\/span>\u00a0because it has been allowed to.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n It is important to understand how Israel\u2019s wantonness and lawlessness unfolded, especially as the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) recently delegated\u00a0\u00a0trusteeship<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(authority) of Gaza to the Trump administration, essentially handing the United States an internationally sanctioned \u201cmandate\u201d of the enclave.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n It is the shameful story of the manner in which the League of Nations, created by the British and other imperial powers, \u201cgave\u201d itself the \u201cmandate\u201d of Palestine; how 28 years later, the United Nations authored a plan to partition the mandate; and how, in 2025, the American empire has sought, in collaboration with Israel, to assume \u201ctrusteeship\u201d over Palestinian land in Gaza.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The Imperial Mandate System, 1919<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n The British and French empires learned, after the horrors of World War I, that they could further their colonial interests in the Middle East, not by aggression, but within the legal framework of international institutions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The League of Nations served that purpose when, in 1919, after the First World War, the victorious Allied powers established the mandate system\u2014traditional colonialism disguised as benevolence.\u00a0 The mandates, meant to be temporary, served to legalize British and French imperial gains over former Ottoman Empire colonies in the Arab Middle East.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Underlying the mandate system was the imperious racist assumption that the people who had lived for thousands of years on the land were incapable of governing themselves, that they needed the \u201ctutelage of an advanced nation\u201d before achieving independence\u2014an attitude that has yet to change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The text of the 1919\u00a0League of Nations Covenant<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(Article 22), for example, reveals the inherent racism of the imperial powers; it stated:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n To those colonies and territories\u2026 which are inhabited by peoples not yet able to stand by themselves under the strenuous conditions of the\u00a0modern world,<\/em>\u00a0there should be applied the principle that the well-being and development of such peoples form a sacred trust of\u00a0civiliz<\/em>ation<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and that securities for the performance of this trust should be embodied in this Covenant\u2026.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n The Mandate of Palestine, 1922<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Betrayal of the Palestinian nation began in 1920 when the League assigned the role of mandatory power in Palestine to the British government.\u00a0 The Mandate of Palestine (1922-1948) laid the foundation for the atrocities and colonial wars waged thereafter by Britain, Israel and the United States.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n In total disregard for the political rights of the indigenous Arab majority (90 percent at that time), the British government included the text of the 1917\u00a0Balfour Declaration<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in its mandate, pledging to support a \u201cnational home for the Jewish people\u201d in Palestine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n By formally approving the mandate in 1922, the League gave legitimacy under international law\u2014law defined by the imperial powers \u2014to the Zionist project, as well as the green light to continue their aggressive expansionist pursuits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n There was nothing in the mandate that gave Britain the right to give away another peoples\u2019 land; land lived on for thousands of years.\u00a0 Instead of decolonization and independence as required, the British government callously and illogically handed Palestine to European colonizers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n United Nations Mandate of Palestine, 1947<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Palestine was, once again, betrayed when the disdainful \u201ctrusteeship\u201d of the League of Nations was replaced with its political invalidation by the United Nations in 1947.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Like its colonial predecessor, the United Nations\u2014created largely by the United States\u2014was structured to institutionalize the dominance and further the interests of major imperial powers.\u00a0 After the devastation of the Second World War, the United States assumed that autocratic power.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n With the establishment in 1945 of the United Nations and dissolution of the League of Nations in 1946, Britain transferred all of its mandate territories\u2014except Palestine\u2014to a\u00a0UN Trusteeship system<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Despite the rising cycle of violence and unrest, Britain continued its \u201ctrusteeship\u201d until 1947 when it officially ceded its mandate, described as a \u201cwasps nest,\u201d to the United Nations.\u00a0 It should be noted that all of the League of Nations mandates were ultimately \u201cguided\u201d toward\u00a0independence<\/a><\/span>\u2014except Palestine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The United Nations\u2019 solution to the Palestine \u201cproblem\u201d was adoption in 1947 of UN General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 181 recommending its partition into two unequal states, one Arab and one Jewish, with Jerusalem under international administration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Although General Assembly resolutions are largely symbolic and are not legally binding on member states, Zionist leaders declared statehood in May 1948.\u00a0 Resolution 181 did, consequently, sow the seeds for Palestinian anti-colonial resistance and perpetual regional conflict and discord.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The Proposed U.S. Mandate of Gaza, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Like all previous imperial actions, the United States has sought to obtain global legitimacy from international institutions to shield the Zionist colony and to impose control over the land of Palestine and the entire region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n By protecting Israel, the United States has sided with powers that exist in a liminal space, outside the law, no matter how dastardly their behavior.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The most recent act of U.S. initiated deception against the Palestinians came with the adoption by the UN Security Council (UNSC) of Resolution 2803, the so-called \u201cTrump Gaza peace plan<\/a><\/span>.\u201d In so doing, it gave international credibility to his proposal and in effect, handed the United States a colonizing mandate over Gaza, passing the occupation and oppression of the Palestinians from Tel Aviv to Washington.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u00a0The\u00a0U.S. \u201cguardianship\u201d plan<\/a><\/span>\u00a0mirrors the legacy of colonial land theft in Palestine\u2014seizure repackaged and rebranded as peaceful resolution.\u00a0 Once again, plunder and dispossession have been shrouded in the guise of diplomatic \u201csolutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n By systematically sidelining the Palestinians, denying their voice, their right to self-determination and their very existence, the United States is continuing the colonial dynamic\u2014imperial policies and racism\u2014that began with the Balfour Declaration and British mandate of Palestine.\u00a0 It has not and will not succeed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The Palestinian people and leaders cannot be fooled. Interactions and transactions, with their adversaries, forged over decades, have fostered a keen understanding of them.\u00a0 Despite unimaginable hardships and extreme duress, they have refused to surrender and to give up their struggle for national liberation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Conclusion: Partnership not Obstruction<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n The historical manipulation of international organizations by powerful states cleared the way for betrayal of the Palestinians and facilitated Israel\u2019s horrors and lawlessness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Although the United Nations has, since its birth, created a comprehensive body of international treaties, laws, condemnations and countless reports, as well as multinational bodies, like the International Court of Justice, to provide legal interpretation and rulings, it has yet to insure justice for Palestine and its people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n What the Security Council has done, however, is allow the genocidal and rogue Zionist colony of Israel to remain a member of the world body and unaccountable for its\u00a078-year war<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on Palestine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Mirroring the United States, the Council\u2019s failure to impose restraints or consequences has cultivated, in Israel, a sense of absolute entitlement and belief that, since 7 October 2023, it has unmitigated impunity to commit genocide, sow discord and wreak havoc across the region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n If it is to have any\u00a0credibility<\/a><\/span>\u00a0now and in the future, the United Nations must take measures to redress more than a half-century of failure to fulfill its obligations and to correct the life-altering injustice it wrought with passage of\u00a0Resolution 181<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n One of the first steps it could and should take to restrain Israeli terrorism is to enact\u00a0UNGA Resolution 377(V)<\/a><\/span>, \u201cUniting for Peace\u201d (adopted in 1950).\u00a0 The resolution empowers the General Assembly to use armed force if the Security Council fails to exercise its primary responsibility of maintaining global peace and security.\u00a0\u00a0Text of Section A<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on the \u201cuse of armed force,\u201d informs:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Resolves that if the Security Council, because of lack of unanimity of the permanent members, fails to exercise its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security in any case where there appears to be a threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression, the General Assembly shall consider the matter immediately with a view to making appropriate recommendations to Members for collective measures, including in the case of a breach of the peace or act of aggression the use of armed force when necessary, to maintain or restore international peace and security.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n Unquestionably, Israel is a regional and global threat, warring on Gaza, the West Bank, on its Arab neighbors and provoking confrontation with Iran.\u00a0 Given that the UNSC has failed its primary responsibilities of preventing genocide, maintaining peace and security, it is time for the majority\u2014the 193 members of the General Assembly\u2014to exert authority (two-thirds majority<\/a><\/span>\u00a0vote required).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n In addition, the United Nations needs to state unequivocally that resisting occupation is a fundamental human right; it isn\u2019t terrorism, it is survival; and that Palestinian resistance, including armed struggle, is legally reinforced under\u00a0international law.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Also, given Israel\u2019s refusal to adhere to international and humanitarian law, as well as the principles of the\u00a0UN Charter<\/a><\/span>, the U.N. should determine that the Zionist colony lacks standing within the international community and should be expelled from the world body.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The Middle East and the global community are at a crossroads, and Palestine and its people are at its heart. The need for benign international intervention on behalf of the Palestinians is long overdue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The United Nations must acknowledge, however belatedly, its role in one of the greatest deceptions of history. And, if it is to live up to its charter and conventions, it has an obligation to work toward the liberation and self-determination of the Palestinian people and ultimately to the restoration of their homeland.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
