Learning to See Beauty

By Afaf Aniba

One of the specialists in psychology once said:
“Try every day to see something beautiful. Look at it with focus, and preserve it as if it were the most precious thing you own.”

I believe this advice is truly well placed. Every day, moments of beauty weave themselves into our existence: in the chirping of birds, in a flower about to bloom, in a radiant smile, in a kind word, in a pleasing view, in falling rain showers, and in fresh, lush greenery.

What is puzzling is that human beings pass by these aesthetic touches that our Lord, Exalted be He, bestows upon our lives without paying them any attention. Why is that? Is it because hearts have died? Or because they are distracted? Or because they are burdened with worries? Or what else could it be?

The best way to resist depression, sadness, and distress is to look around us and search for that beautiful moment which reveals how much the Creator of humankind loves beauty—for He, Exalted be He, is Beautiful. This very morning, for example, I went out to do some shopping. The first things I saw were a colorful bird hopping from one tree to another, green grass wet with dew, acorns displayed at a low price, and the smile of a female vendor. I stored all this beauty in my memory and returned home with it, only to find a kitchen neatly arranged in perfect order.

I thanked God for His blessings. This text is an invitation to you to search for beauty within yourselves and in your surroundings; you will certainly find it, and when you do, take good care to preserve it.
