The Absence of a Culture of Legal Action

By Afaf Aniba

We still do not have a culture of legal follow-up against any form of breach of public order.
For example, our children are exposed every day to harassment, incitement, and verbal and visual persecution, yet parents do not even consider—let alone seriously think about—turning to the courts. This is due to several reasons: first, the absence of official offices for social media companies in our country; then the lack of money and time; and, moreover, many parents’ ignorance of the international and national laws that protect their children.

How many times have I read in Western media about legal proceedings against Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X… and the list is long, because these platforms, in one way or another, have been the cause of illness or even death among children or young adults.

Likewise, we lack a culture of limiting the use of social networks or providing age-appropriate guidance, and there are no laws that prevent access to these platforms from a certain age onward—nor are there any real monitoring mechanisms.

The latest legal case I have been following is the one currently taking place in Los Angeles, led by British families whose children were harmed by the content on these platforms, which has come to threaten individuals’ mental health.

If the West itself has not been spared the consequences of its own inventions, then what about us, who consume content that is alien to us in both form and substance?
Moreover, civil society in our country is weak, and it will not lead awareness campaigns or legal action against those who open the door to every form of moral and psychological pollution.

The absence of deterrent legal texts, the absence of an informed culture aware of the dangers posed by these networks, and the absence of serious parental supervision while children use them—all of this has multiplied the risks and harms. And of course, all of this happens in silence.
So where can people find the means to act and protect themselves ?
