America’s internal problem lies in its moral bankruptcy

By Afaf Aniba

America’s internal problem lies in its moral bankruptcy-its failure to uphold the legacy entrusted by the Founding Fathers.
Is America today truly democratic?
Does America today genuinely embody the independence of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches?
I have my doubts.

Why is there a clash between two Americas-between a liberal left and a conservative right?
Has religiosity become an accusation? Has being a conservative individual or party become a stigma?

The left denounces the right’s war on socialism, communism, and racial diversity.
But did the Founding Fathers even know socialism or communism? Certainly not.
They strove to establish a system of governance that would free them from the arrogance of the British monarchy and from the intellectual and political bankruptcy of the Old World—including the ideas that would later be called socialism and communism.

How, then, did religion-which was the cornerstone for the early European pilgrims fleeing religious persecution in Europe, who came to the land of the Native American tribes full of hope to build a tolerant religious society-become, in 21st-century America, a mark of backwardness, rigidity, and extremism?
Is faith now a crime?

The American project inaugurated by the Constitution of the Founding Fathers was built upon justice and equal opportunity for all to live with dignity, within the values of tolerance and virtue.
Does this project still describe America today?
No.

America has experienced silent revolutions since the Civil War, and it seems that its intellectuals have yet to fully internalize the principle of respecting the fundamental constants of the American nation. Those who accuse the right of populism and racism should review their own records and take stock of a century of action-of their failures to make America more secure, more virtuous, and more cohesive morally, socially, politically, and economically.
